Industry

Look closely and see the hidden beauty in Britain's Industrial landscape
Port Talbot

I have passed Port Talbot many times on the train, being impressed and saddened by the monstrous hulk of the two blast furnaces dominating the landscape.  One day I got off, braved the sulphurous fumes and took pictures. Up close they are quite monumental.

This view comes from the slow boat to the Isle Of Wight from Southampton.  I looked for a spot where the chimneys and tanks of the refinery made a pleasing geometry and found this.

My intention had been to capture the inner beauty of the docks, but instead I was distracted by cranes loading containers onto a train at the Freightliner terminal. The movement and whirr of the winding gear made a strange but enticing choreography.

This is a second view of the Freightliner terminal at Southampton docks.  I painted this one as a companion to the first, showing more of the unique machinery you find around docks.

I crossed the Mersey on the obligatory ferry and followed the promenade to New Brighton. Along the way, the cranes of the dock lined themselves up for this pleasing composition.

Not strictly industrial, but this rusty boat marooned on the shore near Barrow In Furness certainly has the right vibe. The remnants of blue paint, the orange rust and the dark irregular holes made it an interesting subject to paint.
Despite how it appears, no orange paint was used!

Just behind I found another abandoned vessel - a capsule lifeboat of the type used on oilrigs.  The top was open, so I peered inside to the rows of seats - all left as though it had washed up yesterday.
