Southsea Kite Festival

If you are reading this, you are most likely viewing my painting of the kite festival at southsea, Smartphone in hand, having scanned the QR code beside it, and wondering what you'll see.

For your trouble, let me show you a short video from the day that puts the two paintings in context...

The paintings you see are a blend of different aspects. So what did I do....

Painting 1

  • The kites and the sky are from one view. I was looking inland and the kites were being blown towards the sea.
  • The memorial and much of the crowd are from a second view looking towards the sea.
  • I removed some obstruction so you can see sailing boats on the sea.
  • The ice cream van is from a third view, used to hide building work on the promenade.
  • Finally I added or replace some figures with those from another view, and added a few fictional ones to fill out the midground.

Painting 2

  • The sky was grey that day, so I added some patches of blue
  • The kites are largely as is, though I've filled a few gaps
  • I've moved the Spinnaker Tower and Clarence Pier a bit closer in order to fit them both in
  • The background ground is mainly random marks to suggest a crowd
  • I've added a few more figures and objects in the scene to suggest more activity on the field
