Romsey Abbey Flowers

If you are reading this, you are most likely viewing my painting of Romsey Abbey and its wildflowers, Smartphone in hand, having scanned the QR code beside it.

For your trouble, let me give you a bit more insight into the ever changing display...

The flowers were sown in the Spring of 2024. They grew to give a varied display in their first year. For my first two paintings - dawn and evening, I chose the times of day when the face of the Abbey would be in sunlight. In midsummer the sun rises in the NE and sets in the NW, so the North side of the abbey is in sun at the extremes of the day. The flowers however, are largely in shadow at those times, creating quite a contrast.

In 2025, the display was a succession of different colours. Orange wallflowers started the show, but they were too far apart to make a good view. A sea of pink took over for a month or so, before the white flowers (principally ox-eye daisies) stole the show. As these faded blue cornflowers began to dominate, but sadly the show was over as the drought had stifled it. My two paintings from the 2025 season show the sea of pink, and the ox-eye daisies.

What will happen next year? its anyones guess, but the seeds are sitting there waiting to grow again.
