Dartmouth

Tourist town or historic port, lets take a walk around Dartmouth in Devon

Lets start start right in the centre of town, which is a collection of old and distinctive buildings on two sides of a rectangular harbour. You can walk right round. The third side is the quay where you can take various boats and ferries from (and buses for that matter. The fourth side is a park.

The park is nothing spectacular, but its has a nice atmosphere, and when I was there there was a craft fair taking place, and a small cafe serving tea and cake. Its probably best viewed across the rectangular harbour with the boats in the foreground as here...

There are no bridges across the Dart estuary, as the navy wanted to sail their tall ships in and out of their naval base. So the only way across is to pick one of the ferries. Here we are looking across the water to Kingswear, where you can spot the slipway for the lower ferry.

The lower ferry is the flimsiest looking of them all. Its a floating deck that carries just a few cars and the odd intrepid foot passenger. The reward for taking this one is the view back to the quieter end of Dartmouth, where row upon row of colourful houses and a grand old church line the shore.
