Every year I open my place to the public for Hampshire Open Studios. This year (2023) is our tenth such event, so we will be putting on an extra special display of art and craft from Leo Deville (ceramics, drawing, jewellery) and myself (landscape painting, wooden sculpture, metal work).
We have works of art and craft displayed all over the property - the drive, garage, garden, 'teahouse', and the groundfloor, stairs and landing of the house - and now nearly all connected under an extended covered walkway, so should it rain, don't let the weather deter you.
You can find us at...
25 The Tyleshades, Romsey, SO51 5RJ
Open 19th - 28th August, 10:30am - 6pm
Richard Paul's works include:
natural, urban and industrial landscapes of Britain in oil, pen and ink, pencil and pastel - as seen on this website!
quirky wooden 'mushroom' village, trophies and other odd items made from scraps of local found wood
copper plumbing candlesticks and ornamental garden structures
metal tree sculptures with some new variations this year
archive quality prints, and cards
Leo Deville's works include:
sculptural ceramics including garden ornaments
elegant curvaceous tealight pots
stylish biro drawings that draw on many influences including art nouveau and tribal Africa
ceramic based jewellery
archive quality prints, and cards
This year we do not have a guest artist, but there is still plenty of variety on show.
Installations
Last year we had a rocket and space station (made from tin cans) suspended high above our giant fluffy tree. Being our tenth year we plan to have something even more eye catching once I figure out what it will be!
New QR trail
For selected works we have some extra multimedia content showing you more about them. Just scan the QR codes for that extra dimension. Lookout for the QR code Haiku too!
The Garden
After the old trellis was found to be past its best, the grape grotto has been completely refurbished this year, and looking better than ever. A light funnel or two helps brighten the space too.
The sheltered patio area is now larger and more relaxing than ever under the spreading grape vine that is dripping in grapes - very Mediteranean!
The pond no longer has fish, and after it grew to occupy half the pond, frog island has been removed. It has sprung a small leak, but all the rain lately is keeping it topped up.
Summerhouse
The 'tea house' now has an insulated roof and back wall, so hopefully it won't be so hot in there on those sunny days. Work to complete the insulation has been postponed until after the event.
Daily schedule - this will be filled in nearer the time, showing you who is stewarding and what is being demonstrated. Some demonstrations are weather sensitive, and so will be confirmed a day or two ahead.

How To Find Us
We are venue 107 in the Hampshire Open Studios brochure, and venue B on the Romsey trail
Its a residential area with parking available on surrounding streets (not my neighbour's drive please). Bicycles can be parked at the edge of the garden. If you are on foot, we are about 15-20 minutes walk from Romsey town centre, and about 5 minutes from the Botley Rd Co-op.
Here's a map to help you find your way between venues:
