Romsey In snow

These days its rare to find snow in Romsey, but when it falls the town is magically transformed.  But if you are really after Romsey At Christmas, best to try that page instead!

King John's House on Church Street is magical on any evening, but with a fresh coat of snow and the first light of dawn it becomes even more special.

Why the purple sky and snow you may ask? Its all because of the green tinged light from the post office yard next door, causing our eyes to adjust, creating this magic light.

Want to see a bit more of King Johns House and garden? Well the gates are locked at this time, so follow me round the post office to a path by the back car park.  A low fence and a stream stop intruders, but crouch down low and you may just spot this frosty scene with a light dusting of snow from December 2022.

Back to the front, and we cross the road and pass the front of the Abbey (which is not its best side), then round the corner, and... We get to see its majestic facade, outlined here with a little snow that glows brightly in the early dawn light.  A lone streetlight adds a pool of light, balancing this composition nicely.  Who would have thought a parked car would enhance a view?

Silent Night

Down in War Memorial park, and in daylight now the war horse statue is enhanced by a little snow too. In normal light is brown bronze body looks just that - brown, but the bright light shining off the snow brings out subtle tones of orange, purple and blue that give an added dimension to this much loved statue.

Beyond the park, a path leads out to Sadler's Mill. With its front blocked by a tree and this side looking quite dark it can be difficult to get a good picture. But given a coating of snow to bring out the contrast and it becomes something special.

Note the cool blue of the icy water gushing through the weir.

Sadlers Mill

Back to the dawn and returning towards the town, there is another view that caught my eye. Captured here with a limited palette of prussian blue, vandyke brown, mauve and white, only the added yellow glow of the lone streetlight contrasts against the blueness.

First Lioght

Through the arch and the town is flooded with light from the many streetlights, creating pools of varying light across the snow. Just how many colours can you spot in the snow?
